100 Words or Less – The Replacement Killers (1998)

100 words banner

Title – The Replacement Killers

Released – 1998

Director – Antoine Fuqua

Starring – Chow Yun-fat, Mira Sorvino, Michael Rooker, Jürgen Prochnow

Review – Chow Yun-fat’s first foray into US films, TRK is pretty much “Inspector Tequilla: The Hollywood Years”. Chow is as charismatic as ever and director Antoine Fuqua provides brilliant action setpieces that are 50% John Woo bullet-ballet and 50% pure Hollywood. The inventive car wash shootout is a particular highlight. The supporting cast is strong too; Sorvino makes a great heroine, as tough as her male counterpart, and Rooker is surprisingly convincing as a genuine good guy. The plot’s paper thin but the action more than holds the film together. Fans of Chow Yun-fat and his previous Hong Kong action films won’t be disappointed.
