Title – The Scorpion King
Released – 2002
Director – Chuck Harris
Starring – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Kelly Hu, Michael Clarke Duncan, Steven Brand.
Review – A spin-off from the hugely entertaining Mummy series, The Scorpion King is a lesser entry in the franchise. Despite an early starring role for Johnson TSK is sorely missing the Brendan Fraser charm that elevated the occasionally shonky Mummy series. Russell’s cheap hurried direction matches the fake looking sets and CG set-pieces and the performances are pretty universally terrible. Johnson is fun and charismatic though, and there’s an enjoyably hammy turn by Brand as the villainous Memnon. The film shines in the action scenes too, which are well choreographed and exciting enough to look over the films more glaring issues.
