Title – Death Sentence
Released – 2007
Director – James Wan
Starring – Kevin Bacon, Garrett Hedlund, John Goodman
Review – After his son is viciously murdered in a gang initiation, laid-back risk analyst Nick Hume goes on a violent massacre, starting a war in the process. It might just be the grimmest film ever, tonally and aesthetically. But there is some striking cinematography and imagery. It’s a B-movie and it knows it. The scenes of vengeance are thrilling and make you feel a little dirty for enjoying it so much. There is some top-notch direction from James Wan as well, with a very skilful long take across multiple levels of a parking garage. If you can handle it, it’s exhilarating.
